The Black Eyed Peas are an American hip hop group from Los Angeles, consisting of multi-instrumentalist will.i.am and vocalists Fergie, apl.de.ap and Taboo.
Creative path
The story begins in 1988, when eighth-graders William Adams (will.i.am) and Allen Pineda (apl.de.ap) met. Realizing that they had common ideas and preferences in music, the guys decided to join forces to create their own group. They soon began rapping in various Los Angeles nightclubs, calling their duo Atban Klann (A Tribe Beyond a Nation). The duo quickly gained popularity among the local rap and breakdance crowd.
1992-1997
Atban Klann were signed to Ruthless Records (owned by Eazy-E), but their album was not released as their positive and uplifting lyrics were too unusual for Ruthless. Tracks from the unreleased album (Grass Roots) are stored by the organizer of BEP Family and the famous DJ Dj Motiv8.
But after the unexpected collapse and death of Eazy-E in 1995, a third member, Jaime Luis Gomez (Taboo), joined the Atban Klann. They changed the band's name first to the Black Eyed Pods and then to the Black Eyed Peas (the name of a variety of cowpeas popular in the southern states).
1998-2000
After signing with Interscope Records and releasing their debut album, Behind the Front, in 1998, the band received critical acclaim. Monkey Business was literally produced and recorded while the band was constantly on the road. "I was in Brazil buying CDs at a store," will.i.am remembers. "I came across this CD and I thought it was one thing, but it turned out it was something else. Dick Dale's song 'Miserlou,' was on it. At first I was angry - that's not what I I wanted to buy it," he laughs. "But the song was a hit back then."
The song, a dance party anthem, is one of the featured tracks on the album – and has become a sales slogan for getting the best price on electronics. "This song is the beauty of technology. You can record anywhere, anytime. And I love this song because the song has a feel for our shows and lots and lots of energy."
Singer Justin Timberlake joins the group for the song "My Style". "We got along well," says will.i.am, "he sees music in the same direction. And he's a very nice guy."
