How to watch stereo images? There are several easy methods for viewing stereo images.
The first method is suitable for people who already know how to view them. We relax our eyes, without taking our eyes off the picture, and discover a pop-up three-dimensional image.
The second method is suitable for untrained people. Trying to look at one point, we zoom in or out of the image. After a certain time we discover the background, and a figure appears in the foreground.
You can try the third way of viewing: “through” the picture. You need to imagine that you are not looking at the image itself, but at a point located behind the picture at a distance of about 15 cm. The effect will not be long in coming.

Stereo imaging made easy

First, let's look at how a stereo image works and how to look at it.
First of all, it consists of repeating fragments.

It is very important that the width of the repeating fragment is less than the distance between the eyes. For comfortable viewing of a stereo image, the width should range from 1/3 to 2/3 of this value. The greater the width, the deeper (voluminous) image you can get. The smaller the width, the less tired your eyes are from viewing a stereo image.

To see a three-dimensional image, you need to focus your gaze beyond the plane of the picture so that the images for the left and right eyes coincide. For an image consisting entirely of repeating fragments, you will observe exactly the same virtual image (a flat plane). The only difference is that it will seem to you that the drawing has become further away.

How is a three-dimensional image obtained?

In order for an image to become three-dimensional, some parts of it must be perceived as closer, others as more distant. This effect can be achieved by shifting image elements.

Figure 3 shows how the virtual image changed after shifting two elements (red and purple) of the real image one position to the left.

In the virtual image, two artifacts of the same size were formed, equal to the size of the shifted elements. An artifact located to the left of the shift site is perceived as being located closer to the observer (in front of the virtual image plane). The artifact on the right, on the contrary, is perceived as located behind the plane of the virtual image. The brain “figures out” independently about the position of the elements of the virtual image, which are visible to only one eye at a time (marked with a dotted line).

Note that the shift should not exceed half the width of the repeating part. When the size of the shift is close to this limit, it is difficult for the eye to determine whether the observed area is convex or depressed.

If we want to depict objects located only in front of the virtual image plane, we need to be able to deal with unwanted artifacts. To do this, it is enough to shift the elements in each period located to the right of the first place of shift (Figure 4).

It remains to show how objects with different degrees of distance are formed in the virtual image. For a clear example, this time we will shift three elements to the left, but not by one position, but by two. Comparing Figures 4 and 5, we see that in the last figure, due to a shift by a greater number of positions, we got an object located closer than with a shift by one position.

In this tutorial, we'll learn how to apply what we've learned and create interesting and unusual repeating patterns using Photoshop's freeform shapes!

Step 1. Create a new document

As you and I already know from previous lessons, the first thing we need to do is create a separate motif, which will then become a repeating pattern. This requires a new blank document, so go to the menu "File"(File) at the top of the screen and select "New"(New):

As a result, a dialog box will open "New"(New). The size of the document will determine the size of the motif, which in turn will be saved as a repeating pattern. Since a smaller motif will require more repetitions than a larger motif to occupy the same amount of space, the size of the motif will have a significant impact on the overall appearance of the pattern. In our case, we will create an element with a size of 100 x 100 pixels. When you create your own patterns later, you can experiment with the dimensions of the motif, but for the purposes of this tutorial, enter a value of 100 pixels for the parameters Width(Width) and Height(Height). Make sure the setting "Background Content"(Background Contents) changed to "Transparent"(Transparent). Parameter "Permission"(Resolution) can be left unchanged at the default - 72 pixels per inch (pixels/inch):

Click OK to close the dialog box. A new blank document will appear on the screen. Since the document is quite small - only 100 x 100 pixels, I'll zoom in by holding down the Ctrl(Win) / Command(Mac) and pressing the space bar. As a result, the tool is temporarily activated "Scale"(Zoom Tool) (you will see the cursor take the shape of a magnifying glass). Next, click several times anywhere inside the document to zoom in. The image scale became 500%.

Step 2: Add Guides Through the Center of the Document

Now, we need to accurately determine the center of the document, and we can do this with the help of guides. Previously, in a tutorial on learning the basics of creating repeating patterns, we looked at how to add guides using the command "New Guide"(New Guide). This time we will add guidelines using rulers. Both methods of adding guides are convenient, so use either of them at your discretion. In our case, go to the menu section "View"(View) at the top of the screen and select "Rulers"(Rulers):

After this, rulers will appear at the top and left of the document. Click anywhere inside the left ruler and, while holding down the mouse button, move the vertical guide to the center of the document. Release the mouse button to place the guide in the desired location:

Next, click anywhere inside the top ruler and, while holding down the mouse button, move the horizontal guide to the center of the document. Release the mouse button to place the second guide:

Once the guides have been added, you can turn off the rulers by going to the menu section "View"(View) and selecting the item again "Rulers"(Rulers). Or you can use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl+R(Win) / Command+R(Mac) to quickly turn rulers on/off. The place where both guides intersect will be the center of the document. In my screenshot the guides are red. If you took my first tutorial on repeating patterns, you'll know that the guides are that color because I changed their color in the section "Settings"(Preferences) to make them more visible on the screen. By default, the color of guides is blue, so your guides will be that color unless you change their color in the settings:

Don't worry if your guides are a different color, such as blue. It doesn't matter.

Step 3. Select the Free Shape tool

From the toolbar, select a tool "Free figure"(Custom Shape Tool). By default, it is located behind the tool "Rectangle"(Rectangle Tool), so click on the tool icon and hold down the mouse button for a few seconds until a drop-down menu appears on the screen, then select the “Free Shape” tool from the list that appears:

Step 4. Select the “Pixel Fill” option

Photoshop has three ways to use the Shapes group tools. We won't go into detail, but generally speaking we can draw vector shapes, paths, or pixel shapes. The program allows us to save our drawing as a pattern if it is made of pixels, so first we need to tell the program to fill our shapes with pixels. We can do this by selecting the appropriate option in the settings panel at the top of the screen. Toward the left edge of the settings panel is a group of three icons. Each icon represents a specific type of figure that we can draw. Click on the third icon (far right) to select an option "Pixel Fill"(Fill pixels):

Step 5. Select an arbitrary shape

Once we've told the program that we want to work with pixel shapes, we need to select the shape we want to draw. Click on the shape thumbnail in the shape preview window in the settings panel:

As a result, the Shape Palette will open, where small thumbnails of all available shapes will be displayed, from which we can select the one we need. To select a shape, simply click on its thumbnail. In my case, I'll select the heart shape by clicking on it. Once you have selected a shape, click Enter(Win) / Return(Mac) to close the Shapes palette:

Step 6. Draw a shape in the center of the document

Now we need to draw the shape in the center of the document, which is why we added guidelines to define the exact center. We want our shape to be black, so press the letter D to quickly restore the default foreground and background colors. This will make the foreground color black. You can see the current foreground and background colors by looking at their thumbnails at the bottom of the toolbar:

Having chosen black as the foreground color, position the mouse cursor directly in the center of the document - so that the cursor icon (in the form of a target) coincides with the vertical and horizontal guides, and then, while holding the mouse button pressed, begin to move the cursor, drawing a shape. Once you have started drawing the shape, press the keyboard shortcut Shift+Alt(Win) / Shift+Option(Mac) and continue to hold down the keys throughout the drawing process. Hold a key Shift allow you to maintain the original aspect ratio, so your figure won't end up taller and thinner or shorter and thicker than originally intended, while the key Alt(Win) / Option(Mac) will tell the program to draw the shape from the center. When you're done, you should have a similar result (in my case the document scale is 500%, so the edges of the shape look angular):

Step 7: Disable Guides

Once we've drawn the shape, we won't need the guides anymore, and since they're distracting, let's turn them off. Go to menu section "View"(View) at the top of the screen, select "Show"(Show) - "Guides"(Guides). To the left of the word “Guides” you will see a checkmark that tells us that guides are enabled. Click the checkbox again to disable them.

Step 8. Duplicate the layer

Let's make our drawing a little more interesting before saving it as a pattern. Create a copy of the layer by going to the menu section "Layers"(Layer) at the top of the screen and selecting "New"(New) - "Copy to new layer"(Layer via Copy):

You can also press the keyboard shortcut to quickly copy a layer Ctrl+J(Win) / Command+J(Mac). In either case, the program will create a copy of Layer 1 called "Copy Layer 1"(Layer 1 copy) and will place the new layer above the original one in the Layers panel:

Step 9. Apply the “Shift” filter

Just like when we learned the basics of creating repeating patterns, we'll use the Offset filter to add interest to the motif. Go to section "Filter"(Filter) from the menu bar at the top of the screen, select "Other"(Other) and further "Shift"(Offset):

This will open the Shift filter dialog box. We need to enter a value equal to half the document width in the “Horizontal” data entry box and a value equal to half the document height in the “Vertical” data entry box. Since our document has dimensions of 100 x 100 pixels, for the parameters "Horizontally"(Horizontal) and "Vertically"(Vertical) set the value to 50 pixels. Next, make sure that the option at the bottom of the dialog box is selected "Insert clippings"(Wrap Around):

Click OK to close the dialog box. As we will see, the “Shift” filter divided the heart-shaped shape into four equal parts and placed them at the corners of the document. At the moment, the design may seem a little strange, but later, as a repeating pattern, it will not be so. The heart that remains in the center is the original shape we drew in Step 6:

Step 10. Save the drawing as a pattern

Select "Editing"> "Define Pattern"

As a result of this action, a dialog box will open "Pattern name"(Pattern Name), where you will be asked to give a name to the new pattern. A good idea is to include the size of the motif in the name of the pattern if you are designing several similar motifs of different sizes. In my case, I will name the pattern “Hearts 100x100” since my motif dimensions are 100 x 100 pixels. Click OK when you've given your pattern a name to close the dialog box. And now our pattern is saved and ready for use:

Step 11. Create a new document

Let's create a new document to fill it with a new pattern. Same as in Step 1, go to menu "File"(File) and select "New"(New). This time, when the New Document dialog box opens, enter a value of 1000px for the options Width(Width) and Height(Height) and change "Background Content"(Background Contents) on "White"(White). Parameter "Permission"(Resolution) can be left unchanged at the default - 72 pixels per inch (pixels/inch) Click OK to close the dialog box, and a new document filled with white will appear on the screen:

Step 12: Create a new empty layer

Instead of filling the background layer with our pattern, which would lead to some limitations, let's add the pattern to a separate layer. Click on the icon "Create New Layer"(New Layer) at the bottom of the layers panel:

Step 13. Select the Fill Tool

In previous lessons, we learned how to fill a layer with a pattern using the Fill command. This time we'll look at how you can do the same using the tool "Fill"(Paint Bucket Tool), which also allows us to fill a layer or selection with a color or pattern. You'll find the Fill tool in the Tools panel. By default, it is hidden behind the tool "Gradient"(Gradient Tool), so click on the “Gradient” tool, hold down the mouse button until a pop-up menu appears, and select the “Fill” tool from the list:

Step 14. Change the fill source to “Pattern”

With the Fill tool selected, go to the Options panel and select Fill Source as "Pattern"(Pattern) (by default, the fill source is set to "Main color"(Foreground)):

Step 15. Select a pattern

Having selected the “Pattern” item, click on the pattern thumbnail in the preview window in the settings panel:

As a result, the Pattern Palette will open, where we can select the desired pattern. The pattern we just created will be last in the list. Click on its thumbnail to select it. Once you select a pattern, click Enter(Win) / Return(Mac) to close the Pattern Picker:

Step 16. Click inside the document to add a pattern

Make sure that Layer 1 is selected in the layers panel (selected layers are highlighted in blue), then, after selecting the pattern in the settings panel, click anywhere inside the document with the tool active "Fill"(Paint Bucket Tool), causing the document to be immediately filled with a pattern. The pattern will be repeated as many times as required to fill the entire layer.

Our pattern is currently in black and white, but we can easily color it. You can read all the information on coloring the pattern in the previous lesson, so I won’t repeat it here. Below is an example of what the pattern might look like after coloring the background and the pattern itself:

You can see in the Layers panel that I added color using just two color fill layers: one for the background and one for the pattern. And again, you can find out in more detail all the steps necessary for this in the previous lesson:

Loading additional custom shapes

As you followed Step 5 and selected a custom shape in the Shapes Palette, you may have noticed that by default there aren't many shapes available to select from the palette. This choice might be a little frustrating unless you wanted to add repeating arrows, blue bubbles, or envelopes to your design. Fortunately, there are other shapes from which we can choose the one we need. We only need to download them ourselves. Next we'll look at how. With the Shapes Palette open, click on the small arrow icon in the upper right corner:

As a result, a menu will open with various options, including a list of additional sets of shapes from which we can choose the one we need. I won't go through them all since you can do that yourself, but I'll use the following as an example: "Animals"(Animals):

The program will ask if we want to replace the current shapes with new ones or add new shapes to the existing ones at the end of the list. Choose Add(Append):

Back in the Shapes Palette, scroll all the way down the thumbnail list to find new shapes that have been added after the original shapes. Select any of the newly added shapes by clicking on its thumbnail. I'll select a dog paw print shape:

Below is an example of a repeating pattern created from the Dog Track freeform shape. To do this, I first created a new document with a slightly larger size of 150 x 150 pixels to develop the motif (see Step 1), then in the "Shift" filter dialog (Step 8) for the parameters "Horizontally"(Horizontal) and "Vertically"(Vertical) entered values ​​equal to 75 pixels each (half the width and height of the document). Next, I changed the color of the pattern using a color fill layer for the background and another color fill layer for the pattern itself:

Fixation on the body in the form of four squares indicates dominance in the image I somatic sensations. Satisfaction and dissatisfaction with the situation in society is largely determined by a person’s body image, as well as by his general physical condition.

For men who depict the body with four squares, symbolizing a “heroic build,” physical masculine qualities are of great, if not leading, importance. Physical attractiveness and bodily sensations may dominate other personal characteristics. Often this is what determines the choice of profession, which in most cases is associated with risk, thrill-seeking and physical (bodily) endurance. We are talking about the desire to demonstrate in practice one’s physical masculine qualities. A hypersensitive attitude to the physical side of male attractiveness can result in a feeling of loss of masculine dignity if it is impossible to demonstrate oneself, as well as after injury, illness or as a result of age-related changes. For women with a fixation on bodily sensations, physical attractiveness is also of leading importance, which can manifest itself in a distinctly masculine demeanor.

Fixation on troubles that have occurred in the social environment (split in relationship). As a rule, the troubles experienced concern the immediate environment (“the points of the triangles form the core of the body”). The points of the triangles are directed inward, which indicates the severity and painfulness of the experience. The connection of triangles into a cross-crossed square indicates a violation of the holistic image of the body, which reflects the presence of internal discord. The mechanism of defense against experienced conflict most often manifests itself in emphasizing independence, courage and resistance to weaknesses (“external body configuration in the form of a square”). An exaggerated desire for independence and denial of psychological difficulties is a compensatory mechanism that hides the fear of dependence on the social environment. A person strives to be independent so as not to suffer from the actions of others (as was the case before) and not to become a victim of a split in a relationship.

Emphasizing the shoulder line with the help of several triangles, creating the feeling of “broad shoulders,” indicates an excessive fixation on somatic sensations. Self-esteem of a person, his image I largely depends on the condition of the body. Physical I is also associated with a sense of one’s own status in society, which is most typical for emerging young men, for whom physical qualities are of great importance for the feeling of their masculine attractiveness.
