Leaf preparation technology

To make a beautiful panel from natural material, it is important to properly prepare the source materials. You will need:

• freshly picked leaves, flowers, petals;
• unnecessary thick books;
• cardboard;
• cotton wool;
• scissors;
• threads or large rubber bands (not erasers, but those used for banknotes);
• a flat surface that is free for several days (table, shelf).

Drying the material is a slow process, but you definitely shouldn’t rush to get high-quality workpieces for work.

The sequence of drying leaves is as follows:

1. Place the leaves evenly and neatly between the pages of the unwanted book (the paper may get dirty). Do not lay out the leaves one after another, it is better to do this over several pages (they will dry faster and better and will not stick together).
2. Place a book under a press (a box, drawer, or several large books).
3. Wait a few days.
4. Check if the workpieces are dry. If you are satisfied with the quality, take out the leaves and get to work. If the material is not dry, leave it for another couple of days.

How to dry flowers

Flower petals or small (not thick) flowers are dried in the same way as leaves. So, you can prepare flowers of daffodils, phlox, bindweed, viola (pansies), and bells. But asters, roses and other flowers, which have a dense, fleshy base, are best dried as follows:

1. Prepare a sheet of cardboard or thick paper slightly larger than the flower itself.
2. Fold the blank in half like a postcard.
3. Cut a hole of any shape in the center of each side (this is a kind of ventilation so that the flower does not rot).
4. Unfold the cardboard and put a layer of cotton wool inside.
5. Place the flower on the cotton wool.
6. Add another layer of cotton wool on top.
7. Cover with cardboard (fold the flaps).
8. Secure the “card” with rubber bands or tie with thread.
9. It is advisable to put it under a press.
10. Check the result after a few days. If the cotton wool is very wet and the flower is not dry, change the cotton wool and dry it completely.

As you can see, the technology for harvesting leaves and flowers is simple, but if you don’t follow it, you won’t get high-quality material. Leaves that are not dried enough may become deformed, and flowers may lose their petals.

Panel technology

To make a beautiful panel of leaves (photo above), you need to work like this:

1. Use a cardboard base or colored paper if part of the background remains uncovered by the dried material.
2. To make objects of complex unnatural shapes (vases, houses), cut out substrates (blank parts) from thin paper.
3. Apply glue to one side of the paper backing and place dry leaves on top.
4. Wait for the element to dry and trim along the edge contour. Throw away small leaf scraps and use large ones for other parts.
5. When all the components are ready, apply glue to the base and glue the blanks. If necessary, lay out a background of leaves or petals first.

Later, the compiled image could serve as a key, a kind of guide for those who were ready to silently experience the very sensations of the author. Therefore, we can say that for samurai who learned the path of a warrior, oshibana was an integral part of life, just like writing hieroglyphs.

The fragility of dried flowers required the development of certain techniques for preserving the unusual natural material. To prevent the works of this original oriental art from fading in the sun and darkening, Japanese masters began to “pump out” the air between the glass and the painting, creating a vacuum that prevents the plants from deteriorating.

Dried flowers for miniatures using the oshibana technique can be selected and purchased in special dried flower stores. But needless to say, for a true master it is much more pleasant to compose pictures from herbs and flowers prepared independently.

To prepare natural material, only fully blossomed flowers that have gained color and shape are collected. It is important to remember that the plants must be dry. If the flowers are nevertheless collected in rainy weather or early in the morning, when the dew has not yet dried, they must certainly be laid out on a flat surface and dried for several hours.

Under the press, the flowers are laid out on newspapers with good porosity of the paper sheet so that natural moisture escapes well during the drying process. That is, glossy magazine pages are unlikely to be suitable for these purposes.

Wildflowers and roses dry faster than other plants - only 2-3 days. However, their color can be preserved under the right storage conditions for decades.

In addition to dried flowers, the master of oshibana art uses thick paper, a stationery knife and a mock-up mat.

Flower petals and various blades of grass are laid out on paper. Using a special pattern, birch bark is cut and a composition is drawn up, then the intended image is cut out. When the drawing is drawn up, it is fixed using a special film.

Necessary materials

• Fiberboard measuring 50x40 centimeters;
• PVA glue;
• Acrylic varnish (best matte);
• Acrylic paints (in our example we used gold, white, bronze);
• Yellow watercolor paint;
• Wide brush;
• Decorative materials for decorating the canvas: ears of wheat, autumn leaves, twigs, acorns, herbs, rowan or viburnum berries, etc.

Step-by-step instruction

Helpful tip: Before making a picture of autumn leaves, you need to dry them. To do this, place a few leaves between the pages of the book and leave them there for several days. This way they will dry faster and remain perfectly smooth.

1. Use a fiberboard sheet as a base. Make the front side of the painting on its rough side.
2. Mix dry glue with water to form a thick mass to which the necessary materials can be easily attached. The solution can also be prepared in this way: mix dry glue with flour in a ratio of 6 to 3 and add a little PVA glue.
3. When the mixture reaches the viscous consistency we need, mix everything well and apply to the frame.
4. Generously coat the canvas with PVA glue along the entire perimeter of the frame. Let it dry a little. Then apply the pre-prepared mass on top (the layer thickness should be approximately 1 centimeter).
5. Immediately place ears of wheat on top of it and sprinkle with millet. Press them in as tightly as possible, but so that they remain on the surface.
6. Then lift the painting and gently shake off any excess grain.
7. After half an hour, mix PVA glue and acrylic varnish (in a ratio of 1 to 1), cover the ears and millet with the resulting mixture. Immediately after application, the color of the composition will be white, but after drying it will turn transparent.
8. After the glue and varnish are completely dry, paint the frame with gold paint. To do this, use a wide brush. Next, paint the spikelets with bronze paint.
9. Pour some white acrylic paint into a small container and add water. This way the paint will go on more evenly.
10. Also paint the surface of the fiberboard. Do this very carefully so as not to touch the frame. Your fiberboard sheet will look like a canvas.
11. Once the paint has dried a little, begin applying the background.
12. Make all strokes smooth. Paint the middle, closer to the top, with white paint.
13. Next, start darkening the background. The middle should be slightly lighter than the main tone of the canvas. The closer you move to the edges (the frame of the painting), the darker the base color. To do this, after painting the center, add a little gold paint to the white paint.
14. Then add a little yellow tone. Take yellow watercolor paint, first lightly mixing it with white so that it is not too bright, and paint over the white background a little. Set the workpiece aside until completely dry.
15. For decoration in our example, we used various autumn leaves, thin birch branches and various dry herbs. You may also need rowan berries, some acorns and flowers.
16. Take the already dried painting blank and start decorating it. Draw a silhouette of a girl on a landscape sheet. If you don't know how to draw, you can find a ready-made sample. Cut it along the outline.
17. Next, cut off the skirt from the outline and paint the upper part of the female silhouette in gold. You can use the same paint that was used to paint the base. Cut several small strips from the remaining paper. These will be eyelashes.
18. Glue the top part of the workpiece onto the canvas. Then form a wreath of grass, leaves and rowan berries on the girl’s head. To fix it on the canvas, mix PVA glue and acrylic paint in a 1:1 ratio. You will use this mixture to attach other parts in the future.
19. Using the previously prepared layout, make a girl’s skirt from leaves. Glue them in rows, starting from the hem and going up.
20. Attach several branches with leaves near the girl’s hands. You can also use additional decorative elements.
21. Glue branches and leaves on both sides of the girl, laying them out in the shape of a tree. Glue them from the top level, gradually moving down.
22. In the lower left corner of the picture, glue several leaves, blades of grass, small flowers and acorns there.
23. If there is still free space left in the painting, you can fill it in the same way or simply paint it with gold paint.
24. After finishing the work, paint the entire picture with a mixture of varnish and glue. This will make it more voluminous and shiny.

What do you need for work?

• A sheet of plywood or thick cardboard;
• Pencil;

Stages

1. Take a small sheet of plywood or thick cardboard and draw the outline of a maple leaf on it with a simple pencil.
2. Prepare the collected autumn leaves. You can dry them in a book. This will take several days. You can also use a faster drying method: place the leaves on parchment and place in an oven preheated to approximately 120°C for 5-10 minutes.
3. Place the dry sheets along the contour of the drawing on the plywood, gradually filling the entire sketch. Next, grease each of them with PVA glue and secure it to the base of the picture. Set the workpiece aside until completely dry.
4. Please note that after the glue has completely dried, the sheets will become very hard. If there are any excess edges left, you can carefully trim them with nail scissors.
5. Glue the dry blank to a sheet of plywood or cardboard. To make it stick better, use superglue.
6. To make the stem for our large decorative leaf, take a straight twig and also attach it with superglue.
