Valery Zakharov. About the work of a dance coach and Russian champions

The art of dance is akin to magic: you can admire a good dancer endlessly - he fascinates with the beauty and plasticity of his movements, his ability to adapt to any rhythm. If you love to dance yourself and want to teach it to others, choose an interesting, modern and creative profession - a dance instructor.

During the time of the legendary discos of the 80s, dance clubs could not accommodate everyone who wanted to learn the latest innovations: lambada or breakdancing. Since then, only the names of the dance styles have changed, and the rhythms have become faster. Young people willingly participate in sports dance groups - hip-hop, rock and roll, modern jazz, step and hustle. Passionate flamenco and alluring belly dancing (belly dancing) are always popular among the fair sex.

And, of course, all ages are submissive to the parquet classics - waltz, foxtrot, tango, rumba and cha-cha-cha. Even in fitness clubs there is always a pleasant alternative to “hardware” (strength machines) and treadmills: dance aerobics. At the same time, it is dances of modern styles that constitute the main content of the classes, and the word “aerobics” simply indicates their health-improving nature.

The greater the choice of dances, the more people want to learn them. Accordingly, the demand for teaching services is growing. How can one “officially” enter this profession? A completely reliable way is to complete specialized courses. Here you will be able to improve your dancing skills, and most importantly, master the teaching methodology.

Instructor, teacher, choreographer? On the way to perfection

Boris N., dance school "Tequila Dance":

— All dance instructors attend master classes for professionals. This is one of the most effective methods and is useful for dancers and teachers of all levels. Such classes allow you to “plunge” into the style of another dancer and thereby expand your dance horizons. Fortunately, famous dancers and choreographers regularly come to Moscow and St. Petersburg to give master classes: Boris Zavaritsky, Joaquin Perez, Lil Phil - Mariah Carey’s choreographer. So there is an opportunity to learn!

"Dance teacher" sounds old-fashioned. But diplomas of graduates of sports universities and colleges most often indicate a pedagogical qualification: “teacher-choreographer, dance teacher.” In order to be called so with full right, it is necessary, firstly, to pass a strict selection upon admission, secondly, to study for at least three years, and thirdly, to pass state exams in several types of dance and defend a diploma.

This canonical path is not suitable for everyone for various reasons. With the development of the fitness industry, dance has turned from secular entertainment and elite art into a special sport, as well as an element of a healthy lifestyle. It is clear that for everyone there are not enough teachers from the Moscow State Academy of Choreography or the Academy of Russian Ballet. AND I. Vaganova (St. Petersburg).

That is why courses lasting from two to three months to six months are so popular. Of course, express training does not replace secondary vocational or higher education, but it provides the necessary skills. By the way, the shorter the course, the denser and richer the program, which is also designed for mandatory independent work using special textbooks and video materials.

The certificates awarded at the end of most courses (subject to passing a qualifying examination) call fine movement specialists dance instructors as well as group instructors. Specialization is often specified separately - modern jazz, belly dancing, dance aerobics, step dance, etc.

At first glance, choreographers and dance instructors have a common task: to teach people to move beautifully, hear the rhythm, and develop coordination of movements. But there is a significant difference between them, and it’s not just that becoming an instructor is easier. A teacher-choreographer primarily perceives dance as an art, while an instructor perceives it as a sport. Perhaps this is why dance instructors often become trainers working in sports clubs who want to expand their specialization. But this path is also chosen by amateur dancers who have begun to seriously engage in any type of dance.

All to the base!

Unlike universities and colleges with a choreographic focus, dance instructor courses accept everyone. However, the condition for successful training is not only good physical preparation and diligence, but also a choreographic base. That is, knowledge of the basics of classical dance. It would seem, why does a future teacher of modern jazz or dance aerobics need “archaic” cor-de-bras, batmans, plies and chanjean-de-pieds? However, choreography gives the dance instructor posture and correct body positioning, good plasticity and flexibility, refinement of movements and poses, and many other automatic skills necessary for different types of dance. Moreover, without a common base, it will be difficult for you to compete with your professional colleagues. If you learned to dance in an amateur studio, but did not separately study choreography, then before enrolling in instructor courses, it makes sense to individually go through the basics of classical dance with a good teacher.

Three "crusts"

How to choose courses?

  • The less an organization publicly praises itself, the better.
  • Be wary if you are guaranteed “everything at once”: a state diploma, an internship, a job. Promises should be realistic: what specific skills you will acquire, what opportunities you will have to improve them, etc.
  • Be especially careful if you hear inappropriate comments about other educational institutions, programs or teachers during courses.
  • Remember that every company and every training program has its pros and cons. The arbiter is your own taste and future intentions.

Do you want not only to find a job “with a guarantee”, but also to become a famous person in the world of dance over time? Then you need to develop and confirm your qualifications. There are many training programs for dance instructors; courses are opened at sports and dance associations (for example, the Hustle Federation) and in independent educational institutions (Wellness Academy, Fitness Academy, etc.). How not to make a mistake in choosing?

First of all, determine the direction or dance style that attracts you most. Decide for yourself whether you want to become a general-purpose instructor (in this case, it makes sense to attend castings that are regularly held by large sports clubs) or specialize in one thing - belly dancing, Latin, tap dance, hustle. Then soberly assess your capabilities, initial preparation, time and financial resources. And finally, decide what document you expect to receive in the end.

In most cases, the courses issue a certificate confirming the right to conduct instructor activities in the chosen area. Attention: this can be either a state-issued certificate of advanced training or an “author’s” certificate of a specific club. The latter usually has less weight in the eyes of the employer. But if the club is well known and has existed for many years, such a certificate can also be valuable. Unfortunately, any dance certificate is only valid for three years, and then it must be confirmed by retaking the qualifying exam. A state-issued diploma after courses is issued less frequently, but such practice exists (for example, in the educational center "Znanie"). Its advantageous difference from a certificate is that it does not become obsolete.

In the classroom: theory and practice

The solid status of the educational institution that has opened courses for dance instructors is confirmed by the presence of eminent teachers on the staff. This guarantees professional training in teaching methods. In addition, the training program should contain both practical and theoretical blocks. For the convenience of students, the full course is most often divided into steps lasting from 36 to 107-112 ac. hours. Each stage is dedicated to a specific dance style and methods of teaching it.

Throughout the course, students take intermediate tests and do homework, as well as attend master classes and workshops. During master classes, most of the time is devoted to practicing practical skills. For example, the famous teacher Irina Chernikina, in collaboration with several educational institutions, conducts regular advanced training courses for professional instructors of dance programs “Bellydance PRO - belly dance, professional level.” This program allows you to hone your teaching skills and expand the range of dance movements.

At the final exam, you need to show not only the exercises you have learned, but also pass an interview on all theoretical sections. For example, you may be asked what biochemical changes occur in the cells of the body under the influence of different types of physical activity (aerobic, anaerobic, etc.), and also describe in detail the structure of a specific lesson.

Training is not cheap - the price for a one and a half to two month course can range from 7 to 19 thousand rubles. depending on the intensity of the program, and for a six-month program - from 35 to 70 thousand rubles. and more.

Know and be able to

Of course, the “crust” (diploma, certificate or certificate) is an important result of training, but you cannot count on it alone. By the end of the program, the dance instructor must develop his own teaching methodology. This is the most difficult thing, a kind of thesis. After all, your program should be accessible to any student; for it, you need to develop algorithms for performing elements, think through lesson plans. It is important to gain teaching experience. Constant training at home, watching videos of performances by famous dancers and attending master classes provide many advantages when learning. And also training lessons that you can give to your friends. And lastly: in order to teach others to dance, it is important not only to move beautifully yourself, but also to have tact, sensitivity, intuition, and the ability to gain trust.

Having been involved in competitive ballroom dancing for 10 years and giving it up, focusing on my studies, I always wanted to return. After finishing my third year at the university, my trainer acquaintances, from whom I was still studying, called me and offered to work as a trainer-teacher at the just opening Children's Sports School for Youth.

I spent my first lesson as a trainer not alone, but with my teacher. He showed me what to give, how, gave me a basic set of melodies, and then I began my independent work as a coach-teacher in sports ballroom dancing.

If we talk about what coaching includes, then everything is simple, a mandatory attribute is a warm-up, which requires warming up all muscle groups, then repeating the basics of any dance from the dance program and learning new compositions. There are only 10 dances: five dances of the Latin American program - that is, fast ones, such as samba, rumba, cha-cha-cha, jive and paso doble, and five dances of the European program - slow waltz, Viennese waltz, quickstep, tango and slow foxtrot . All these dances are studied one by one, based on the age of the student and his gradual preparation, level of dance and knowledge.

Being a coach in this sport is quite a difficult task, especially from a psychological point of view. Yes, you can be an excellent expert in ballroom dancing, but it is very important to be able to correctly explain dance to your child, and not just show how and what is done, especially when it comes to muscle work. After all, a ten-year-old boy, when he speaks, works with his hips, becomes not very dexterous. Very important aspects of the work of a partner that need to be explained in such a way that their contact causes minimal inconvenience.

In fact, all these are little things, if you love working with children, it was much more scary and difficult for me to explain to them why they didn’t make it to the finals again, especially if the reason was not at all that they danced poorly, but because that Petit’s dad is the sponsor of these competitions.

Such dishonest moments when judges were paid, or now you can not just put money in your pocket, but, for example, take an individual lesson from a coach who will judge at the next competition. Such classes cost good money, and the coach does his job, but the child, even if he shows a bad result at the competition, will have a greater chance of getting to first place than the one who danced a little better or did the same, but the coach does not know him.

A separate topic that surprised me most was the coaches themselves, or rather their communication with each other. There is no respect, although no, it is indicative, of course, you will not see anything, but inside there is a cesspool going on: luring children away from each other, discussing behind the back, intrigues... This terribly darkens this profession! Instead of raising the level of dance and competing not in profanity and money, but in how the child dances, but no, it was unrealistic.

Finally, I would like to say that working as a dance coach means working not only with children, but, especially, with their parents! Now this is problem number one, to explain to the child’s mother that he is a bad dancer and therefore does not receive awards, because the coach is always to blame.

I had one such mother who couldn’t even follow the dress code for her child’s training, let alone do her hair. Her daughter treated everything with the same disregard as her mother. During one of the classes, I told the girl what she could and couldn’t do in class, once again drawing her attention to the fact that she was not physically ready (the only one of all) for training and sent her to change clothes.

In the evening, after the general lesson, I had individual lessons, and so this mother flew in and made such a scandal that she brought me to tears in front of the children (and this is very difficult to do), when she left, she called me names, saying that her daughter would not be here and slammed the door . The children, watching all this, of course, were in shock, and I, quickly wiping away my tears, got to work... All subsequent classes, the girl came with her hair combed and properly dressed...

Now I’m not involved in teaching, yes, I miss the children who give a sea of emotions when you give yourself completely to them, but the last straw for me was betrayal, betrayal, both of the coach with whom I constantly worked, and of the couple, who was the best in my group.

– What are your responsibilities as a coach?
– I am raising a new generation of Russian athletes. Year after year, starting from the very basics, I lead athletes to the maximum level. We study choreography, master dance techniques and bring performances to perfection.
I must say, we really succeed. For example, last weekend my students aged 14–15 became Russian champions and will now prepare for the World Championships.

– What is sports ballroom dancing?
– Sports ballroom dancing is divided into two parts: Latin American and European. Latin American ones are samba, cha-cha-cha, rumba, paso doble, jive. European - slow waltz, tango, Viennese waltz and two foxtrots - fast and slow. At first I myself danced both programs, but then limited myself to only the European one.

– Do dancers have to choose one of two programs?
- Not necessary. At first, children learn both programs. Then, if they wish, they can choose one of them. Or dance all 10 dances - that option is also available.

– Do you come up with your own dances?
– Not just dances, but entire programs. The dance has basic classical elements. The simplest thing is to rearrange them and assemble the dance, like a construction set.
With more experienced guys, we invent new elements and change figures. Often we borrow something from other directions or from modern choreography. For example, Latin American programs often use adapted elements from hip-hop.

– How is your working day?
– I love sports, so, as a rule, my day starts with a run. Then I go to practice and dance on my own to keep in shape. From three o'clock in the afternoon to ten in the evening, couples come to my classes, whom I train individually. We also periodically have group lessons, where students listen to lectures, study theory and train in groups.

– What theory should dancers study?
– Dancers don’t just have to be able to perform various elements. They must know what degree of rotation is in this element, what degree of rotation. This information has to be memorized.

– How many pairs of dancers do you lead?
– In Moscow, I usually train 7-8 pairs of different ages. In addition, I control several clubs in the regions and periodically fly there.

– You judge a dance competition. What do you pay attention to first?
– First of all, on musicality. Next comes the technical characteristics: balance, interaction, complexity of choreography, emotional content, etc.

– Why did you decide to take up dancing?
– I myself don’t remember due to my age, but my mother told me how we passed by a dance competition and decided to stay and watch. The dances themselves didn’t really impress me, but I liked the girls. Therefore, when my mother suggested that I try it, I agreed. And little by little I was drawn in. At the age of 14 I won the Moscow Championship and reached the final of the Russian Championship. By the age of 17, I had won the Russian Championship.
And then I broke up with my dance partner, and financial problems began. That's why I decided to become a coach.

– How to become a dance coach?
– To do this you need to pass an official exam. Only good dancers who have participated in tournaments and earned a certain class are allowed to take the exam. I applied, demonstrated my class, and then took the exam in the Latin American and European programs, talked about the elements, showed them.
After a person passes the exam to become a coach, trains with couples for two years and brings them to a certain level, he can take the exam to become a judge. So I did, and for my merits I was immediately assigned the first category.

– What are classes, and how do dancers earn them?
– This is a gradation of athletes’ assessments. At the beginning there is class E - the lowest, then D, C, B, A, S and M - master of sports. People score points in competitions. The better the result, the more points are awarded for it, and the sooner the person moves to the next class.

– Does it happen that a good dancer turns out to be a bad coach?
- Undoubtedly. It happens that a person has a perfectly developed body, he dances delightfully, but cannot convey his message to children. It turns out that children can only copy his movements, but nothing will remain in their heads. This will be enough for some, but other children perceive information better by ear, and cannot learn if the coach does not explain anything to them.

– At what age is it better for children to start dancing?
– Our children begin to study at the age of 4–5, but at this age it is done more for the development of coordination and hearing. But at 6–7 years old, children can already perform simple combinations and begin to dance a slow waltz, cha-cha-cha.
In the past, it was not uncommon for people to start dancing as teenagers of 13–14 years old, or even come as adults and achieve success and fame. Nowadays the competition has become greater, so mainly people who have been dancing since childhood achieve titles.

– Which dance school is better to choose?
– In the initial stages, you can, in principle, go to any club. There the child will be taught to listen to music and shown the basic elements. And when it becomes clear that it’s time to develop further, you can move to a top sports and ballroom dancing club, whose students have become prize-winners of various championships. For example, I now work in the Latin Quarter dance club and collaborate with CSKA. We have champions both there and there.

– What competencies does a dance coach need?
– You need to be able to listen to children and their parents, and also resolve conflicts, because in a couple there are two people, and they are of opposite sexes, so quarrels are not uncommon. And, of course, you need to be professionally prepared.

– Where can a dance coach work?
– As a rule, coaches register as individual entrepreneurs and open their own clubs. They prepare the halls so that dancers can train in them, because not just any surface will suit them: they need at least laminate, and better yet, parquet. We have a Federation that registers these clubs.
Previously, trainers often worked in schools as additional education teachers. But now this practice is disappearing - directors are reluctant to let outsiders in.

– How much can a sports dance coach earn?
– The average cost of a lesson that lasts 45 minutes is 800 rubles. And then everything depends on the title of the coach, his workload and the number of students.

– What career path can a coach have?
– His career path depends on the success of his wards. The peak of skill is to raise at least one Russian champion. Then a queue of people who want to study is lined up for them, and they can already select the most talented guys.

– It turns out that all coaches raise champions?
– No, there is such a direction as social dancing. It is now very popular in the USA and Asia, but it is also developing here. Coaches teach people who do not expect athletic results, but just came to have a good time, some basic elements.

– What difficulties might a dance coach encounter?
– The most difficult thing is to work with children who do not want to dance, but their parents force them. At such moments, I cease to understand why I am doing this, everything begins to irritate me. Fortunately, now I have reached a level where couples who strive for this themselves come to train with me.

– What can you recommend reading or watching for high school students who want to become dance coaches?
– I recommend watching videos from the Russian championships, just to enjoy this beauty. All performances of the participants are on YouTube. And to learn more about the work of a coach, you can watch the recording from the congress "New Generation", in which I participated. On it, trainers alternately speak on different topics for 35–40 minutes.
