- For what? I don’t see any difference between Moscow and Yekaterinburg. I have everything I need for work and life: an apartment, a driver, an office. It’s convenient for me in Yekaterinburg - it’s only a two-hour flight to Moscow. Moreover, I have a family and a theater here.

– Reveal the secret of your relationship with your wife. How do you manage to maintain feelings?

“I can’t reveal such secrets.” In family relationships, everything is individual. Moreover, not every person can do as much work as I do daily. My wife and I sometimes joke that thanks to her recipes for dishes that she prepared in the kitchen, I managed to survive in prison. The prison diet was not surprising (smiles). It's good that she's not an artist.

– You have been together for thirty-seven years. Lately, not everyone can boast of so many years lived together!

- Yeah, I know. In my opinion, a woman should yield to a man in many ways. My wife is a very wise woman, besides the fact that I love her and we have lived together for so long. We understand each other well. At our age, love does not play a special role; it fades into the background. And mutual understanding, respect and understanding of the common hearth come first. – Do you remember your first meeting with your wife?

- Certainly. We met at geodetic practice. I was in my second year, and in the summer we all went on internships. The students cooked for us in the dining room. I rarely went to this canteen. It stood in the forest and looked more like a large barracks. When I went, I never handed over the dishes. Although there was a notice posted there: “Pick up the dishes after yourself.” For the only time in my life, my conscience bothered me, and I thought that I needed to hand over the dishes. I leaned through the window, saw her and immediately fell in love. You should have seen this picture: the whole face is wrapped in a scarf, one nose is sticking out, and there is steam from the pots all around. But nevertheless, it turned out that we have been together for 37 years.

– So love at first sight still exists?

- Certainly! It happens only at first sight.

– Is your wife jealous of so many fans?

- How is he not jealous? Jealousy is inherent in any woman. It's just expressed in different forms. Some boil toadstools and mix them into the soup, others create scandals, and others react differently. But I never did anything to hurt my wife. I tried not to. Although it happened. Yes, it happened.

– Do conflicts happen in your family?

- Almost not. Conflicts between a man and a woman always arise because of little things. Women talk a lot. Men think more. She speaks and at this moment interferes. Some men, however, develop immunity against this.

– Alexander, you sing exclusively chanson. Why is it so popular lately in Russia?

– Because it has a big history and big roots. Pop music - what Channel One shows - has not come into contact with the earth for a long time. Songs about nothing, people of uncertain gender and nationality. This is not interesting to me, and I know many people are not interested. The pop will not last long.

- Why?

– Because pop music is derivative. What our pop music is today has no roots in the world. This is a get-together, everyone cooks in the same pot: the same faces climb from one channel to another. When they meet, they ask about rings, earrings, and beads. And chanson is a Russian song, it’s about everything! Maybe sad – about prison as well. But all the topics are from life. And everything that is natural finds responses in the human soul and will live for a long time. Chanson is eternal. At the same time, we must not forget that chanson is not a prison, not a gang, or a bunk. These are beautiful love songs.

– But many people associate it with prison and prisoners!

“Such rumors are spread by idiots!” Look, it's coming from the central channels. Chanson is pure compared to what happens in “House-2”. He criticized the Soviet regime. In principle he was not a Komsomol member; he terribly did not tolerate them. The authorities were interested in such a person, and the highest circles kept a vigilant eye on him.

Since the 1970s, he fell in love with cars and for this reason he got a job as an auto mechanic. His job was to restore cars after car accidents. Novikov had a “kopek” car, which he purchased. Some driver crashed it, and Alexander managed to restore it, thus taking it for himself. In the late 70s I became interested in rock music. Sasha got a job in restaurants in Sverdlovsk as a musician and singer. He worked in such establishments as “Cosmos”, “Malachite”, “Ural dumplings”.

The beginning of creativity

Over the 4 years of work, I collected quite a lot of money. He opened his own workshop, Novik-Records. There he began recording his rock songs.

He created his own group “Rock Polygon” in 1980. He called his first album “Rock Polygon”. The songs were performed in the styles of rock and roll, reggae, new wave with elements of punk rock and psychedelic rock. The government did not support the activity of the musicians, so the group was not entirely legal. The musical equipment was made by Novikov himself. Musicians still use some of the equipment today.

True, he immediately told Novikov: “I can roll this out to the whole country in two months, but you, young man, will be imprisoned.” The guy’s moral character did not stop him, and already on May 3, 1984, the album “Take Me, Cabby” was released. The album became very popular, broke all records in terms of circulation, and was listened to in all corners of the country and throughout the Soviet Union. The furor was amazing. The musician was being watched, his phone was wiretapped, and the sector of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union was outraged by this behavior.

Arrest and freedom

On October 5, 1984, the musician was captured right on the street and placed in a detention center in Sverdlovsk. The criminal case contained every song of his and a review of it. The authorities believed that Alexander Novikov should go to either a psychiatric hospital or prison. The musician was also accused of creating musical equipment. He was given 10 years of strict regime.

During all the years of imprisonment, he was offered light work, but Alexander refused; he, like everyone else, worked in logging and construction.
