“We are for this holiday to become truly like this, including for families. Let someone come to Red Square, someone congratulate Kirill and Methodius on their name day - this is also part of the celebration, because a holiday that does not have a personal dimension is not a holiday, in my opinion,” emphasized the deputy chairman of the Synodal Department on the relationship of the Church with society and the media of the Moscow Patriarchate Vakhtang Kipshidze.

On May 24, a grandiose choral concert dedicated to the Day of Slavic Literature and Culture was held on Red Square. More than a dozen children's choirs from the capital took part in it.

This evening, Moscow professional, educational and amateur choral groups united into a huge combined composition on the main square of Russia to perform popularly beloved songs of the 19th-20th centuries: folk (“Oh, you are a wide steppe”), military (“Katyusha”, “We one victory is needed”, “Farewell of the Slavic woman”), children’s songs (“Sunny Circle”, “It’s fun to walk together”, “There is nothing better in the world”), songs of the Soviet period (“I love you life”, “Nadezhda”, “I I’m walking around Moscow”). Suffice it to say that such cultural events have not taken place in Russia for several decades. A huge choir of two thousand, located on a stage specially constructed for the occasion, united 27 groups, including: Choir of the Academic Music College at the Moscow State Conservatory. P.I. Tchaikovsky, State Academic Choir of Russia named after. A.A. Yurlova, State Academic Russian Choir named after A.V. Sveshnikova, Moscow male chamber choir V.M. Rybin, Moscow State Academic Chamber Choir conducted by Vladimir Minin, Choir of the Sretensky Monastery, Choir of the Song and Dance Ensemble of the Military Space Defense Forces, Patriarchal Choir of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, Children and Youth Choir of the Union of Composers of Russia "Preobrazhenie", Big Children's Choir named after V. .WITH. Popov, Concert Choir of the Children's Musical and Choral School "Joy", Children's Choir "Preobrazhenie" of the Union of Composers of Russia, and many others. Instrumental support for the huge choral composition was provided by two orchestras (wind and symphony) of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation under the direction of the chief military conductor of Russia, Honored Artist of the Russian Federation, Lieutenant General Valery Khalilov.

The concert, called “Russia Sings. Our Favorite Songs” was dedicated to the Day of Slavic Literature and Culture. Every year on this day, May 24, the memory of Saints Equal-to-the-Apostles Cyril and Methodius, educators who created the Slavic alphabet and translated the Bible into Slavic, is honored. The Day of Slavic Literature and Culture is the only state-church holiday in Russia. This is not just a tribute to the memory of the founders of Slavic writing, but also a symbol of the unity of the Slavic peoples, their inextricable historical connection and common cultural heritage. The holiday was revived in Russia in 1986, and in 1991 it acquired state status. The Day of Great Enlighteners annually brings together scientists, writers and cultural figures from Russia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Macedonia and other countries. Each year a new capital was chosen to host the main celebrations. Since 2010, Moscow has become the center of festive celebrations.

The organizers of the holiday on Red Square this year were the Russian Orthodox Church, the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and the Moscow Government.

“On this cloudy festive evening, we are beginning, perhaps, a wonderful tradition - to gather together on Red Square to sing,” the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch of Moscow and All Rus' Kirill, addressed those gathered with a welcoming speech. - A song, like nothing else, unites people, and every person knows this well. When relatives and close people meet, the feast is often accompanied by a song. When soldiers go into battle, they also sing. We know that a song raises a person to military and labor feats, it mobilizes a person’s will, directs him to achieve his goal.

Today we celebrate the memory of Saints Equal-to-the-Apostles Cyril and Methodius, two outstanding people, educators who created our alphabet, grammar, who laid the foundation for the Slavic literary language, who stand at the origins of our culture. These are our ancestors who revealed world culture to the Russian people and all Slavs. It is remarkable that the first thing the brothers Cyril and Methodius did was translate it into Slavic and put the words of the Bible into this alphabet. This means that the origins of our culture are the highest spiritual ideals. And what then appeared - literature, poetry, including song poetry - all this, in the end, came from there... Many of you know that in the Church we also pray through song, we sing songs that we call chants. But many of you also know that sometimes a simple song becomes a prayer. Many people who have gone through difficult circumstances in their lives know this; people know this well.

Today I invite you all to sing, not just listen to wonderful music performed by wonderful choirs, but also sing together. Let's sing those songs that united our grandparents, fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, and which today are able to unite us as one people. Congratulations on the holiday! Christ is Risen!" - concluded Patriarch Kirill.

The holiday of Russian song was conceived and carried out precisely as a national one - the choral groups located on the stage were echoed by the entire Red Square. To do this, the words of the songs were projected onto huge screens installed in front of the stage. The musical performance was completed by the powerful tutti of the “Glory” choir M.I. Glinka from the opera “A Life for the Tsar”, colored by festive fireworks that flashed in the evening sky, brightened after the rain.

For hundreds of concert participants and listeners, this action became an unexpected and generous gift.
