Three characters simultaneously coexist in every person. One likes to fantasize, another always makes plans for the future, and the third never tires of noticing dangerous moments in any situation. These are three roles: dreamer, realist and critic. The Dilts method is based on dividing the entire thought process into three components.

Imagine that upon leaving a shopping center you were offered to buy a lottery ticket. The dreamer in you will think that you can win the grand prize. Which character is the most important?

Joseph Kosuth (born January 31, 1945 in Toledo, Ohio, USA) is a renowned contemporary American artist, essayist, essayist and journalist; one of the founders of conceptual art.

Joseph Kosuth attended the Toledo Museum School of Design from 1955 to 1962 and took lessons from the Belgian painter Line Bloom Draper. In 1963, Kossuth entered the Cleveland Art Institute. He spent the next year in Paris and traveled through Europe and North Africa. He moved to New York in 1965 and attended the School of Visual Arts until 1967.

Kossuth made his famous work “One and Three Chairs” while a student. The work looks like a chair, a photograph of that chair, and a copy of the dictionary entry for “chair.” The key to understanding the work is the fact that the photograph shows exactly the chair on display. Thus, self-thematizing work contains the context of its own presentation. According to the author, the chair and its photograph should change with each new exposure. Two elements remain unchanged: a copy of the dictionary entry “chair” and a diagram with instructions for installing the work. Both elements are part of the concept and signed by the artist. This is a philosophical work that refers to Plato's treatise "The Republic". This work explains what kind of art should correspond to an ideal society - there should be strict censorship, and not all art can exist.

“Tell me one more thing about the painter: do you think he is trying to reproduce everything that is found in nature, or is he imitating the creations of masters? - Creations of masters. - Is this what these creations really are or what they appear to be? You have to differentiate this too. - What task does painting set itself each time? Does it strive to reproduce real existence or only appearance? In other words, is painting a reproduction of ghosts or reality? - Ghosts. - This means that imitative art is far from reality. That is why, it seems to me, it can reproduce anything, because it only slightly touches any thing, and even then only a ghostly reflection of it comes out. Kossuth repeats this idea in One and Three Chairs.

A few years later, Kossuth writes, 1969: “All art (after Duchamp) is conceptual (in nature) because art only exists conceptually "). Kossuth argued that traditional art-historical discourse had come to an end. In its place, he proposed a radical exploration of the means by which art acquires its cultural significance and its status as art. "To be an artist today," Kosuth commented, "means asking questions about the nature of art."

French artist Marcel Duchamp prepared the “soil” for conceptualists with his readymades. In conceptualism, the concept of a work is more important than its physical expression; the purpose of art is to convey an idea. Conceptual objects can exist in the form of phrases, texts, diagrams, graphs, drawings, photographs, audio and video materials. Any object, phenomenon, or process can become an object of art, since conceptual art is a pure artistic gesture. Conceptual art does not appeal to emotional perception, but to the intellectual comprehension of what is seen.

Kossuth denies everything metaphysical and personal in art; the artist’s self-expression is not important. Art cannot entertain, the only thing that matters is art’s reflection on itself.

“One and three chairs” is a formula for what art is.

There is a whole series with objects, but there are some deviations from the idea of ​​the first work.

“A Shovel and Three Shovels”: the work is identified with one of Duchamp’s first readymades.

“A lamp and three lamps”: the lamp and its image may not match, as, unlike the photograph, the real lamp may be turned on or off.

“The Clock and Five O'clock, 1965: the object and the photograph are never the same, except for two moments a day.

“Plants and Three Plants”: the matches depend on how long the installation has been in the museum.

Koosuth created a series of works that are his own descriptions - words from neon tubes.

Kossuth always tries to avoid identifying his works, so that he works with different contexts, and at some point he stops working with materials, only texts remain. This transition is indicated in the First Investigations series (subtitled Art As Idea As Idea), which included dictionary definitions of words such as "water", "meaning", "idea". Kossuth sought to show that art lies not in the object itself, but in the idea or concept of the work.

Since 1969, texts have been taken out of the gallery and placed in urban space - public art.

In the Text/Context series (1978-1979), the artist placed proposals about art and language and their socio-cultural context on billboards.

Then Kossuth writes the text and crosses it out - the text is repressed, but not forgotten. In his Zero and Not (1986), the words were mechanically imprinted on paper and then partially covered with tape.

In 1990, Kossuth brings together “reprehensible” works in one exhibition space, works that at some point in history were banned by censorship.

The act of demonization was dramatized by Kabakov and Joseph Kosuth in their joint exhibition entitled "Corridor of Two Banalities" (Ujazdovsky Castle, Poland, 1994). The installation, which played up the parallels and differences between communal and extra-communal narratives, was a long row of tables pushed close to each other: on the one hand, the shabby and rickety tables of Russia, on the other, the even and neat tables of the West. On both tables there were texts: on the first - fragments of communal conversations, on the second - sayings of famous personalities, “rulers of thoughts”. Textural contrasts between parts of the installation gave a visual perspective to the confrontation between two linguistic paradigms: collective speech and the language of power.

Kossuth participated in three Kassel Documents: in 1972, 1982 and 1992.

The artist lives in New York and Belgium.
