“50 years of Oleg Rybkin” (“Petersburg Theater Magazine” dated 10/18/2012)

KRASNOYARSK, October 3 – RIA Novosti, Victoria Melnikova. A graduate of GITIS and a student of Pyotr Fomenko, Oleg Rybkin has been the chief director of the Krasnoyarsk Drama Theater for seven years. A. S. Pushkin. During this time, he managed to turn Pushka into one of the best regional theaters in Russia, and therefore was twice nominated for the Golden Mask and even received a prestigious government award for his contribution to the development of theatrical art.

At the opening of the new season at Pushka, Rybkin told RIA Novosti about the reconstruction of the theater building, shared how he sees modern theatrical art, and explained why a mat is needed on stage.

The theater opens the new season in camp conditions due to the reconstruction of the building. How difficult does this make your work as a director?

“This makes the work catastrophically difficult.” Due to reconstruction, we have become highly dependent on others. I have to ask my colleagues to rent space. Someone comes to meet us, and someone says: sorry, we have our own creative plans. And we can understand them; we are not only colleagues, but also, in a sense, competitors.

Today the Pushkin Theater plays performances on ten different stages. We constantly have to transport huge sets, props, and costumes from one end of the city to the other. This also makes the job more difficult. Not to mention the fact that the venues themselves where we have to play (most often, these are old cultural centers) are in terrible condition and require repairs. Not only performing, but also rehearsing on such stages is difficult.

The Palace of Culture is not a theater. During our rehearsals, aerobics, sports dancing or disco take place in other halls. The noise is terrible, and in the meantime we need to practice a quiet, soulful scene.

- Was there a fear that the team would scatter due to such conditions?

- Certainly. But this, fortunately, did not happen. On the contrary, in such field conditions we managed to stage Maxim Gorky’s complex play “Barbarians,” where we assembled a strong cast and built large-scale sets. As a result, the performance turned out even better than many of our Moscow colleagues.

The court dismissed the case to return its building to the Krasnoyarsk theaterThe theater asked to return the theater building to it, including the dismantled elements that constitute the subject of the object’s protection, scientific and design documentation and executive documentation for the dismantling of the object’s protection items.

With “Barbarians” we were invited to a festival in Nizhny Novgorod, the homeland of Maxim Gorky. Another question is that our nomadic life affected the viewer. A certain audience went to the Pushkin Theater for whom theater is a holiday. This audience is accustomed to dressing nicely for the theater, changing their shoes in the lobby, visiting the buffet, and discussing what they saw during intermission.

Unfortunately, our viewer is now deprived of all this. They sometimes come up to us and say: you restore the building and we will come to you again, but we will not go to the right bank.

- It turns out that now the theater has become closer to the audience from the outskirts of the city?

- Exactly. In connection with the reconstruction, a new viewer came to us, who, perhaps, had never been to the theater before. And there are some difficulties associated with this. The original viewer of "The Cannon" knows what modern drama is, he is ready for a variety of directorial decisions. And to a viewer from the outskirts of the city, these decisions sometimes seem extreme.

It happened that people came up to us after the performance and were unhappy, expressed complaints: “What kind of nonsense are you showing us?! This is not how we imagined the theater.”

- What then should a modern repertory theater be like so that a new viewer would be happy to come to it?

— It is important to understand that the theater is not a museum where everything has been static for centuries. The performance can be anything but boring. Personally, I always find a reason to leave a boring performance. Why torture yourself with a bad production? After all, theater should evoke emotions, even negative ones. In addition, I believe that modern theater should provoke the viewer, not console.

- Do you use obscene language in performances specifically to provoke the audience?

— I use swearing on stage with undisguised pleasure, including for this purpose. But I still think that there is no need to abuse it. Such vocabulary is only possible on a small stage, where people who want to hear it will come. I don’t think that modern Russian repertory theater should focus only on plays written in a similar language.

In the Krasnoyarsk theater, for example, on the small stage we use obscenities, and on the large stage we stage Gorky in the classical interpretation, where there are different feelings and a different language.

What do you think of the new form of performing arts that appeared this summer in Krasnoyarsk - the Rooftop Theater?

- This is a very good initiative. The guys stage simple plays in the open air, on the roof of one of the houses. For the off-season, when theaters are on vacation and the audience wants to go somewhere, this is an ideal place. But, of course, this does not mean that performances of this kind will be able to completely replace repertory theater.

For example, we have three performances - “Colonel Bird”, “The Little Humpbacked Horse” and “Night of Errors”, which this season will be or have already been performed for the hundredth time and always with a full house. It is difficult to imagine that any project performance would have successfully existed for so long.

You collaborated with the best theaters in the country: you worked in the Omsk Drama and in the Novosibirsk Red Torch, but settled in Krasnoyarsk. What attracted you to the Pushkin Theater?

— I feel comfortable working here. I can stage what interests me and at the same time not encounter obstacles from the theater management. In addition, “Cannon” has a balanced troupe - there are stars, there are beginning actors. It’s easy and pleasant for me to work with many people.

- What have you achieved in seven years of work at the Krasnoyarsk theater as chief director?

“It seems to me that we managed to create a theater that is ready for a variety of experiments. We have already accustomed the viewer to this, so even the unexpectedly free interpretation of Chekhov's "The Seagull" by true admirers of "The Cannon" is received with a bang. I also think we managed to successfully balance the theater’s repertoire between classics and modern drama.

We stage plays by young playwrights: Yaroslava Pulinovich, Dmitry Bogoslavsky, Pavel Sanaev and classics: Moliere, Chekhov, Vampilov. Now, for example, we are preparing two new performances: a children’s play based on Stevenson’s novel “Treasure Island” and an adult play based on the play “The Dresser” by English playwright Ronald Harwood. And for the opening of the restored theater building, I plan to stage a Shakespeare play.

-Which theaters are closest to you in spirit and mood? Where do you, as a viewer, go with pleasure?

- That's a very difficult question. In short, I love everything talented. Of course, one of my favorite theaters was the workshop of my teacher Pyotr Fomenko. Only he, with his charisma and charm, was able to create a unique theatrical experiment of its kind. Communication with Pyotr Naumovich is an inoculation for life.

He always treated the theater as a miracle. As his student, I, of course, try to match. Make your performances interesting, truthful, and touching the heartstrings. By and large, this correspondence occurs subconsciously. Sometimes, while working on a play, I catch myself thinking that Pyotr Naumovich would have liked this, but he would not have approved of this.

- What did he categorically not approve of?

— The director’s frivolous attitude towards the production and disrespect for the audience.
